Apple Galette
Ingredients:
1 package (15 ounce) refrigerated pie crusts
A single refrigerated or homemade pie crust
Granny Smith apples (about 2 pounds)
3/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
Lemon Juice
1/3 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Flour
Pinch of Nutmeg
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees
1. Ask an adult help you peel, core and thinly slice the apples. Squeeze lemon juice on apples to coat them and toss with the vanilla. Mix together the cinnamon, sugar, flour, nutmeg.
2. Place the dough on the baking sheet. Beginning one inch in from the outer edge, place the apple slices in a circle overlapping each slice on the last one. Continue placing slices in circles until the center is reached. Use all slices by placing them wherever they fit. Sprinkle the apples with the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
3. Fold the edge of the dough over the apples along the edge, pleating it as you go (overlapping). The
center of the galette will be open. Brush the dough with an egg wash or a little milk. This will help the dough to brown. Bake 40 minutes - 55 minutes until the apples are cooked and the dough has browned.
Serve warm ala mode (with ice cream) or at room temperature. Want to get extravagant? Drizzle caramel sauce over warm galette. Other ideas: add raisins, nuts, dried fruit. Make the galette with slices of fresh peaches, plums etc.
